You are interested in renewable energy from the deserts of North Africa and the Middle East? You are currently/have been researching a related topic? Apply for the DESERTEC Thesis Award.

You could win free entrance and trip to Dii’s Desert Energy Conference in Cairo and present your paper at the conference. 

The competition aims at encouraging students and young academics to research on the generation of renewable energy in the deserts of the Middle East and North Africa and its transmission to Europe. Selected candidates will have the opportunity to exchange views with experts and to hear about the latest trends regarding the DESERTEC Vision at Dii’s Annual Conference.

Who can apply: All students or academics from the Middle East, North Africa and Europe are invited to participate in the competition. Your paper must be on a subject you are currently/have been researching within the framework of the university or research centre.

Subject of the paper: The paper should be related to a subject that is relevant for the implementation of the DESERTEC vision. Papers related to power generation from sun and wind energy in the deserts, electricity transmission over long distances or renewable energy project financing are eligible for the award. Papers dealing with the socio-economic effects of the implementation of the DESERTEC Vision in producing countries are also relevant.

Nature of the award: The top 3 papers, selected by a jury of desert power experts, will enjoy the opportunity to present their work on Dii’s annual conference in November in Cairo. They will additionally receive free travel to, and accommodation during, the event. The 10 best papers will receive a free pass to the conference and will be published on the Dii and DESERTEC Foundation websites.

How to submit a paper:
The nomination materials should include:

  1. Executive summary of the paper (no longer than four pages), a full version of the paper should be available upon request
  2. Completed form showing that the paper has been examined by a professor within the framework of the university to download here :  link
  3. Motivation letter (no longer than one page): What is your interest in DESERTEC? Why would you like to attend the conference?
  4. Your CV

Deadline: Please mail your submission in English and in PDF form no later than16th September 2011 to Noëlie Vegas: vegas@dii-eumena.com

Evaluation process: All nominations will be evaluated by a committee of DESERTEC University Network representatives, DESERTEC Foundation and Dii experts at the end of September. The names of the successful candidates will be published on the Dii and DESERTEC Foundation websites approx. one month prior to the event.
